The 4 Ps of marketing explained with examples

Tabla de contenidos

The 4 Ps of marketing are the four decisions that define how an offer reaches the market: product, price, place and promotion. They were formulated more than sixty years ago and still hold, because they do not describe a trend but the only levers a company can actually pull.

Product

Not just what you manufacture: it includes the warranty, the packaging, after-sales service and what people believe they are buying. Two companies can sell the same object and have different products.

Price

This is the P that communicates most. A high price promises quality and forces you to sustain it; a low one promises access and forces you to have volume. The usual mistake is setting it by copying a competitor, without knowing whether their cost structure resembles yours.

Place

Where and how it is bought. It covers physical and digital channels, distributors, delivery times and geographic coverage. In Peru, for instance, being able to respond in the regions is a place decision many competitors cannot match.

Promotion

This is where advertising, public relations, content and the sales force live. It is the most visible P, which is why it gets confused with marketing as a whole.

What matters is how they interact

The 4 Ps are not a checklist but a system: change one and the other three move. Raising the price without improving the product breeds resentment; expanding place without delivery capacity breeds complaints; promoting something the channel does not stock breeds angry customers.

When a campaign underperforms, the cause is usually in the first three Ps, not the fourth. But since promotion is the only visible one, it is the first to be blamed.

Where video fits

Video lives in promotion, but its content depends on the other three. A video promising immediate delivery when place does not allow it is not an audiovisual production problem: it is a strategic contradiction that video merely amplifies.

So before shooting, review all four decisions. If they are aligned, video accelerates things; if not, all it does is help more people discover the mismatch.
