A brief is the document where everyone agrees, before starting, what problem a project solves and how you will know whether it worked. It is the difference between a production approved on the first pass and one that gets remade three times.
It does not need to be long. A good brief fits on one page.
What it must contain
- Objective. What you want to achieve, in one sentence. “Prospective clients understand in one minute what our plant does” is an objective. “An institutional video” is a format.
- Audience. Who will watch and what they already know. Addressing a technical buyer is not the same as addressing a ministry.
- Single message. If the audience remembers only one thing, what should it be?
- What should happen next. Call, request a quote, trust, vote, apply. Without this there is no way to measure anything.
- Real constraints. Deadline, budget, available locations, permits, who has to approve.
- What cannot be touched. Brand colours, mandatory wording, forbidden topics.
What is unnecessary in almost every brief
Adjectives. “Modern”, “impactful”, “disruptive” and “fresh” mean different things to different people and help no one decide anything. Replace them with concrete references: two or three pieces you like and, above all, why you like them.
The script is also unnecessary. If the brief already contains the shots, you are buying execution, not judgement.
The questions that prevent rework
- Who approves the final version, and when will they be available?
- Is there existing material to reuse or to avoid?
- Where will it be published? A vertical social video and a trade-fair video are not shot the same way.
- What happened last time you did something similar?
- What would make you consider this project a failure?
That last question surfaces expectations nobody had said out loud, and it is the one that has saved the most shoots.
A living brief, not a formality
The brief is signed at the start but consulted at every decision: choosing the location, approving the script, editing. If an idea is good but does not serve the written objective, it does not go in. That discipline is what makes the result resemble what was promised.
